01 · Review logic

The bank needs to understand who you are, what you do and why the account is needed

Central Bank of the UAE guidance describes the core elements of customer due diligence: customer identification, beneficial owner identification and verification, understanding the purpose of the relationship and the business, risk profiling and ongoing monitoring.

Company formation documents are therefore only the starting point. The bank also needs a clear view of the product, owner experience, transaction countries, customers, suppliers, currencies, amounts and economic connection to the UAE.

What forms a KYC profile
AreaExamples of evidenceTypical risk
Company and UBOLicence, constitutional documents, passport and ownership chartUnclear controlling owner or inconsistent information
Commercial purposeProduct explanation, website, deck and founder experienceVague description without a clear UAE rationale
CounterpartiesContracts, invoices, letters of intent and customer profilesCountries or sectors conflict with the stated model
TransactionsTurnover forecast, currencies, average payment and purposeUnrealistic values or no calculation
Funds and wealthStatements, salary, dividends, asset sale and accountsThe amount is not supported by its origin

02 · Consistency

The common weakness is contradiction, not one missing file

If the licence says software development, the website sells marketing, the contract describes trading and the forecast contains large cash activity, there is no single business model. More documents do not resolve that inconsistency until the actual activity is explained.

Before filing, reconcile the product, customers, geography and money flow across every document. A forecast may be preliminary, but its assumptions should be clear.

Checklist

  • Activity matches the website and contracts.
  • Owner experience supports the chosen field.
  • Customer and supplier countries match the payment forecast.
  • Amounts and currencies are realistic for the business stage.
  • Address, contacts and ownership are consistent everywhere.

03 · SoF and SoW

Source of funds and source of wealth require different explanations

Evidence should support the narrative by amount, date and parties. Facts must not be hidden or changed to fit an expected response; the bank can compare the application with independent information and later transactions.

Source of funds versus source of wealth
ConceptQuestion answeredExamples of evidence
Source of fundsWhere did the specific launch or transaction amount come from?Statement, salary, dividends, asset sale or loan agreement
Source of wealthHow did the owner build their overall capital?Business and career history, accounts, tax records, investments or inheritance

04 · Risk profile

Citizenship is a factor, not a predetermined banking decision

Financial institutions apply a risk-based approach, screen customers, beneficial owners and transactions against applicable sanctions lists, and may conduct enhanced due diligence where risk is higher. Each bank sets its own acceptance policy within the legal and control framework.

Entrepreneurs from Russia and the CIS should clearly disclose tax residence, residential address, existing banking relationships, source of funds, counterparty countries and the commercial purpose of the structure. Approval or rejection should never be promised solely on the basis of a passport.

05 · Filing and interview

Answer directly and support the answer with evidence

  • Explain the product in one or two factual sentences.
  • Name actual customer and supplier countries.
  • Show how turnover and average payment were estimated.
  • Connect the starting capital to a documented source.
  • Separate signed business from plans and negotiations.
  • Reply to an additional request with one structured package.

06 · Readiness checklist

What to review before the application

  • The company and every UBO have current identification documents.
  • A concise business model explanation is ready.
  • The website and corporate email are ready or their absence is explained.

  • Source of funds and source of wealth are documented separately.
  • Sanctions and reputational factors have been considered.
  • Documents are translated or certified where the bank requires it.
